Title

A Resolution of the City Commission approving a Request for Qualifications (RFQ) followed by a Request for Proposals (RFP) process for the Coral Gables’ 2023 Art Basel program. (unanimously recommended by the Arts Advisory Panel approval/denial vote: 7 to 0, and the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 5 to 0).

Body

The Cultural Development Board historically recommends City participation in Miami’s Art Week and, more specifically, an affiliation with Art Basel.

Since 2016, the City has received recognition support from Art Basel for an annual public art exhibition. The recognition of Art Basel encourages the City to maintain quality programming that invites residents and visitors to experience all the arts within the City Beautiful.

With the goal of programming further ahead, and with an interest in supporting Florida artists, the Arts Advisory Panel (AAP) thoughtfully discussed options for 2023 and made a motion recommending a Request for Qualifications (RFQ), followed by a Request for Proposal (RFP) process.

The Panel recommended distribution of an RFQ to regional artists (throughout South Florida). Respondents to the RFQ may be reviewed by a committee consisting of members of the AAP and additional members as agreed upon by the Cultural Development Board (CDB).

A select number of artists from the RFQ would be invited to submit a proposal for a permanent sculpture to be added to the City’s public art collection. Proposals would be considered by the AAP and CDB for a final recommendation to the City Commission.

Funding for the proposal phase up to $10,000 is being requested through the Art Fund.

Funding for the artwork is recommended at $200,000 and will be brought to the City Commission as a separate resolution.

The Arts Advisory Panel voted unanimously (7-0) to recommend using an RFQ, followed by an RFP, process for the 2023 Art Basel program at their meeting on September 14, 2022.

The Cultural Development Board voted unanimously (6-0) to recommend using an RFQ, followed by an RFP, process for the 2023 Art Basel program at their meeting on September 20, 2022.
