Title

A Resolution of the City Commission approving celebration of the recently installed sculpture “Mean Average” by Tony Cragg during Miami Art Week and Art Basel, application to Art Basel for an official event, and funding up to $35,000 from the Art Fund toward interpretive and marketing materials (unanimously recommended by the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 6 to 0).

Body

The Cultural Development Board historically recommends City participation in Miami’s Art Week and, more specifically, an affiliation with Art Basel.

Since 2016, the City has received recognition support from Art Basel for an annual exhibition.

On June 28, 2022, the City Commission approved artists Janine Antoni and George Sanchez-Calderon to submit proposals of artwork for exhibition during Miami Art Week through winter 2022 and for application to Art Basel.

Proposals were received and presented by both artists to the Arts Advisory Panel and Cultural Development Board for exhibitions of artwork as follows:

Janine Antoni:

“I touch your listening” and “Whispering through a stone” are two potentially permanent artworks that contemplate and invite the process of listening on a civic and personal level.

George Sanchez-Calderon:

“Pax Americana 2022” is a temporary exhibition inviting conversation between viewers and two large -scale iconic figures along with a proposed fair for consulate participation.

On August 2, 2022, the Arts Advisory Panel discussed the proposals and made motions supporting Janine Antoni’s temporary exhibition of one, or permanent acquisition of both, sculpture(s) as presented, although only one of the artworks would be ready in time for Art Basel 2022.

On August 4, 2022, the Cultural Development Board discussed the proposals and made a motion not accepting the recommendations of the Arts Advisory Panel. After continued discussion, the Cultural Development Board made a motion unanimously recommending celebration of the recently installed Tony Cragg sculpture at The Plaza development project and for application as this year’s Coral Gables Art Basel project.

Building on the established relationship with Art Basel, the City proposes to submit an Art Basel VIP event application to celebrate artwork.

Funding of $35,000 for the proposed recommendation, related expenses, and marketing is proposed through the art fund.
