Body

Durban Segnini Gallery approached Mayor Valdes-Fauli requesting a temporary exhibition of the artwork Untitled by artist William Barbosa.

Mayor Valdes-Fauli forwarded the request through the City Manager to the Arts Advisory Panel and Cultural Development Board for their review and recommendation to the City Commission.

About the artist:

William Barbosa was born in Ocaña, Colombia, in 1955. A self-taught artist, his metal sculpting was guided by his work in the metallurgic industry. In 1975 he moved to Caracas, Venezuela, where he developed his artistic career. Barbosa is known for work within the Madí movement, an international abstract style focusing on non-representational geometric abstraction. William Barbosa’s work is in private and public collections throughout Europe, in Argentina, Colombia, South Korea, the United States and Venezuela.

Installation is proposed in a prominent, accessible site; the location currently being explored is within the Alhambra Circle median just west of Le Jeune Road.

Funding for the temporary installation is estimated below $20,000 and is being proposed through the Durban Segnini Gallery with the City providing promotional support of the exhibition.

The Arts Advisory Panel voted unanimously (8-0) to recommend support of the temporary public exhibition of William Barbosa’s Untitled at their meeting on September 23, 2020. The Cultural Development Board voted unanimously (6-0) to recommend support of the temporary public exhibition of William Barbosa’s Untitled at their meeting on September 30, 2020.
