Studies have indicated that debris and nutrients from stormwater runoff are a contributing factor to the deterioration of Biscayne Bay.
The City of Coral Gables is at the forefront of protecting our waterways and Biscayne Bay through our various water quality monitoring/testing projects in partnership with Florida International University and other entities. In addition, the City has been a leader in encouraging the reduction of the single use plastics and expanded polystyrene which can end up in our storm drains and waterways.
This pilot program will test the effectiveness of curb inlet grates in reducing the amount of debris entering the City’s positive storm sewer system and by default, our waterways. It will check for potential negative impacts to the system’s ability to dispose of stormwater runoff, estimate long term cost of implementation and maintenance, and assess preliminary indications of their durability.
This project also aligns with the City’s Keep Coral Gables Beautiful mission to promote environmental sustainability and educate the community to take action every day to reduce litter from our open spaces and waterways, improve recycling effort and keep our City Beautiful.
