Title

A Resolution approving permanent locations of four artworks by Hank Willis Thomas.

Body

On May 22, 2018, the City Commission approved a temporary exhibition of artist Hank Willis Thomas’ series of four sculptural benches during Art Basel and through Winter of 2019.

On November 13, 2018, the City Commission approved purchase of the four sculptural benches.

The series of benches were installed as part of the artist’s exhibition in Coral Gables titled “The truth is I welcome you” and consists of one previously designed bench and three newly designed benches for Coral Gables.

The artworks were originally treated and installed as a temporary exhibition with the understanding that they would require removal to prepare them for permanent installation.

Two of the proposed locations are the same as the temporary installation sites and two proposed locations are near the original installation sites. The proposed locations are as follows:

Venetian Pool area at De Soto Blvd. & Almeria Ave.

Lola B. Walker Pioneer’s Park at Grand Ave. & Lincoln Drive.

Jaycee Park at Hardee Road & Cabellero Blvd.

Downtown at Miracle Mile (Coral Way) & LeJeune Road.

Funds for the preparation and installation are being proposed through use of the art acquisition fund.
