Title

A Resolution approving funding of $250,000 from the Art Acquisition Fund for a temporary public art exhibition by Rafael Barrios and for the permanent acquisition of the artwork “Pause.” (unanimously recommended by the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 5 to 0).

Body

On June 11, 2019, the City Commission approved a public art exhibition by artist Rafael Barrios to take place during Miami Art Week through winter 2019 and for application to Art Basel.

A revised proposal was submitted by the artist for large-scale sculpture and works of art on loan. Costs for the artwork were provided with the understanding that the City provide engineering, installation, permitting, and exhibition costs, including application and implementation of the annual Art Basel VIP event.

Funding for the temporary exhibition, related expenses, and permanent acquisition of the artwork “Pause” is proposed through use of the art acquisition fund.

The cost of the sculpture “Pause” is $165,000 (one hundred sixty-five thousand dollars) and related support is estimated to be $85,000 (eighty-five thousand dollars).  Staff recommends the City utilize up to $250,000 (two hundred fifty thousand dollars) from the Art Acquisition Fund to cover project expenses.

The Cultural Development Board voted unanimously (5-0) to recommend funding for a temporary public exhibition by Rafael Barrios, related expenses, and acquisition of the sculpture “Pause” at their meeting on August 6, 2019.
