Title
A Resolution approving an artist concept for a temporary public artwork installed at Giralda Plaza for the summer months of 2019. (unanimously recommended by the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 4 to 0).
Body
The City desires to continue temporary activations at Giralda Plaza that are unique and provide welcoming experiences for residents and visitors to Coral Gables.
The Historical Resources and Cultural Arts Department partnered with the Economic Development Department to develop an annual artist driven temporary public art installation referred to as Giralda Sky.
On February 12, 2019, the City Commissioned approved release of a Call for Art for Giralda Sky, of which thirty-six (36) responsive proposals were received.
An ad hoc Giralda Sky Selection Panel (as noted in the approved Call for Art) consisting of members of the Arts Advisory Panel, the Business Improvement District, and a Giralda Plaza business owner, and members of the Cultural Development Board, were provided access to all applications and reviewed them prior to their respective meetings.
On March 19, 2019, the Selection Panel met, reviewed all applications and recommended five (5) proposals in an order of preference to the Cultural Development Board.
On March 20, 2019, the Cultural Development Board met, reviewed all applications, noted the recommendations of the Giralda Sky Selection Panel and voted unanimously to recommend the proposal “Sun Stories” by artist Jessy Nite.
Funding for the temporary installation is being proposed through use of the art acquisition fund for the artwork only, and does not include rental of the attachment (truss or other) system, marketing and other expenses.
The Cultural Development Board voted unanimously (4-0) to recommend support of the Giralda Sky temporary public art installation titled “Sun Stories”, at their meeting on March 20, 2019.
