Coral Gables Arts Advisory Panel Meeting of January 25, 2017.

PRE-QUALIFIED ARTIST REQUESTS (ACTION):

Panel members were provided materials for artist Paul Fullerton, who is requesting pre-qualification approval. Ms. Cathers introduced the item and noted the sculptural gate on Alhambra Circle by the artist. Panel members discussed other works familiar to them by the artist, including the kinetic sculpture on Biscayne Bay. The Panel briefly discussed the qualifications of Mr. Fullerton and made the following motion:

 

Ms. Tschumy made a motion to accept Paul Fullerton as a pre-qualified Art in Public Places artist. Mr. Roselione-Valadez seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES PROJECT UPDATES:

Segovia Circle Sculptures

Ms. Cathers reported on the Passion/Passiflora Incarnation artwork events that took place in December in conjunction with Art Basel, stating that approximately 50 people were in attendance at the artist talk, the exhibition was well-received, and about 80 attended the Art Basel VIP event with people attending from all over the world including Art Basel VIP Representative, Stefanie Reed.

 

Giralda Avenue Streetscape

The Panel was informed that the Giralda Avenue Streetscape public art proposal by Sibylle Pasche was approved by the City Commission.

 

Gables Waterway

The Panel was informed that the Gables Waterway public art proposal by Alberto Cavalieri was approved by the City Commission.

 

Jean Ward

The Panel was advised that Mr. Volsky asked that the park on the corner of Granada Boulevard and Alhambra Circle be considered as a location for the three Jean Ward sculptures located at the library prior to restoration. Staff is following up.

 

ADDITIONAL PANEL BUSINESS:

The Panel was informed that Lauren Hall was approved by the City Commission as a new member of the Arts Advisory Panel.

 

The panel agreed to select a chair and vice-chair at the next meeting.

 

Dr. Damian asked for information on the proposed parking garage plans along Andalusia Avenue south of Miracle Mile. Mr. Mindreau provided an overview of the proposals received by the City, stating that this is a public/private undertaking, with the City owning the land and developer owning the building. Dr. Damian asked if art has been proposed within the project. Staff replied that they had not received any proposals for an artist or artwork on the project as of this date. The panel discussed opportunities for public art within the project such as architectural treatments, paseo enhancements, and opportunities for annual rotating two-dimensional artworks. The Panel asked staff to reach out to the developers, expressing the Panel’s desire to incorporate public art within the project.

Ms. Cathers distributed commemorative notebooks from the Board and Committees reception.
