One of the purposes of the Cultural Development Board is to make recommendations to the City Commission on matters pertaining to donations having artistic or cultural value. In addition, the Board makes recommendations to the City Commission regarding all manner of public art with the assistance of the Arts Advisory Panel.
As part of their monthly Board meetings, the Cultural Development Board discusses updates to public art projects. Understanding the importance of the City’s first public art commission, Passion/Passiflora Incarnation by world-renowned artist Alice Aycock, the Board has discussed the value of their role and the public process in future public art acquisitions.
On December 5, 2016, the Cultural Development Board discussed events educating the public about the artwork (artist talk, exhibition, and Art Basel VIP event) and the recommendation of the Arts Advisory Panel.
On December 5, 2016, the Cultural Development Board made the following motion supporting the Arts Advisory Panel’s Resolution and the public artwork Passion/Passiflora Incarnation at its current location on Segovia Street at Coral Way:
Ms. Burgos made a motion echoing the Arts Advisory Panel’s Resolution and strong support of the appointed Segovia Circle Artwork Judging Panel, the selection process that was followed, and the ultimate selection of the Alice Ayock artwork Passion/Passiflora Incarnation and installation; further recommending that the City Commission keep the artworks at their installed locations within the Segovia Street traffic circles and urging the Commission to resolve the matter as soon as possible with the encouragement of greater citizen involvement throughout future public art projects.
