A Resolution naming the passive park at the corner of Alhambra Circle and Mendavia Avenue in honor of Betsy Adams and the Coral Gables Garden Club.
Body
Betsy Adams joined the Garden Club after moving to Coral Gables in 1958. In the Ensuing fifty-six years, her leadership of that organization and other community service have produced enormous enhancements to the historical, cultural, educational, recreational, and aesthetic reputation of the City.
As president of the Garden Club, Betsy conceived, planned and led the club to approve and commit their talent, time, resources and efforts to "The Coral Gables Adopt-An-Entrance Project." This unique Garden Club/City partnership was successfully completed with the construction and donation of the beautiful entrance ways at Coral Way and Red Road, Miracle Mile and Douglas Road, and Ponce de Leon Blvd. and S.W. 8th Street.
Betsy and the Garden Club made other major contributions to the City including the George Merrick statue at City Hall and the statue of Althea Merrick at the historic Merrick House on Coral Way.
For a lifetime of community service that extends even beyond her work with the Garden Club, Betsy has received numerous awards including a proclamation from the Coral Gables Commission naming March 31, 2008, 'Betsy Adams Day in Coral Gables", the Deep South Region Civic Development Award from the National Council of State Garden Clubs, the 2006 Citizen of the Year Award from the Coral Gable Rotary Club, and in 2007 she was inducted as a member of the Julia S.
