Minutes: Minutes from prior meetings, November 9, 2010 and January 11, 2011, were approved by Committee.
Coral Gables Senior High School Update: Coral Gables High is doing a school wide push for FCAT preparation. Various strategies are being used to improve and maintain the FCAT scores for the school. On February 26, 2011, the school is having a large fundraising event, to raise money for international causes, they are expecting over a 1,000 people on campus for the event.
Ponce de Leon Middle School Update: This year 131, fifth graders qualified for Ponce de Leon Middle's IB Program. The school is expanding their 6th grade enrollment for the IB program. 65 students are participating in voluntary FCAT training classes on Saturdays, in an effort to improve their FCAT scores. In addition, Ponce is running additional FCAT training labs during the school days to help targeted students with the FCAT tests. Ponce is preparing for an upcoming IB evaluation. The school has to be recertified for the IB program every five years.
Goals for the Committee: Discussion on what the committee can do to promote the support of local Coral Gables schools through such programs as Adopt-a-Classroom and possible partnership with the Coral Gables Chamber of Commerce to do so. Also discussion on a statement that could be sent to various sources, such as E-news, Channel 77, PTSAs to promote and educate the public on the purpose and scope of the SCRC.
Next Meeting Dates: The SCRC will meet again on March 8, 2011, at Coral Gables High School.
