Battalion Chief Gilberto Hernandez has been selected October’s Firefighter of the Month for his act of concern and consideration in dealing with the public, fellow employees, and supervisors. Specifically, for his courageous actions while rendering aid to victims of an accident. On the afternoon of October 28th, 2019, Battalion Chief Gilberto Hernandez witnessed a motorcyclist vs automobile accident on I-95, on his way home from assisting Broward Sheriff's Office at their promotional assessment center. Chief Hernandez quickly pulled his personal vehicle off to the shoulder of the road and made his way to the accident scene. Upon realizing the motorcyclist had sustained significant and potentially life-threatening injuries Chief Hernandez quickly began to render aid. He stayed on the scene until he was relieved by BSO Fire Department. Chief Hernandez’s selfless act made a significant difference in the ultimate outcome of the patient.
Chief Hernandez is a 27-year veteran of the Coral Gables Fire Department, he has always set a high standard and leads by example. His actions on October 28th, are a testament to his character and willingness to put the wellbeing of others ahead of his personal safety. Chief Hernandez is deserving of Firefighter of the month for the month of October.
