Introduced to Congress by the Association of Public Safety Communications Officials (APCO) International in 1991, National Public Safety Telecommunications Week is the second full week of April each year. Every year, at this time, the Coral Gables Police Department recognizes the person selected as the Communications Operator of the Year. This is the highest honor bestowed upon a Communications Operator or Supervisor responsible for answering emergency calls, dispatching emergency professionals and equipment, and rendering life-saving assistance to the citizens of Coral Gables.
