Title

A Resolution of the Waterway Advisory Board recommending the City Commission object to Miami-Dade County's (MDC) design for a viewing area at the US-1 bridge as part of the Underline Project; and requesting a 30-day extension to the U. S. Coast Guard to allow sufficient time to review MDC's presentation and other related information.

Body

At the January 14, 2025 City Commission meeting, the Waterway Advisory Board (Board) recommended objecting to the water viewing area at the US-1 bridge and requested an extension to submit comments to the U.S. Coast Guard.   At this meeting, Miami-Dade County staff agreed to meet with the Board in February to further discuss.

At the February 5, 2025 Waterway Advisory Board meeting, Miami-Dade County presented the viewing area project to the Board and answered their questions.

Upon completion of their presentation, the Board made the below motions:

Mr. Meyer motioned to object to the County’s design for a viewing area, citing concerns regarding safety. Emphasizing that the design should align with the City’s "No Fishing from Bridges" requirement, that this area will inevitably encourage fishermen, and it is not critical to the plan and goal of providing safe passage above the waterway or below the bridge. The motion was seconded by Mr. Galan and unanimously approved.

Mr. Meyer motioned to recommend that the City Commission request a 30-day extension from the Coast Guard for their comment period. This extension would allow the Waterway Advisory Board to review the documentation presented during the Board meeting on February 5, 2025 and other project related plans and information. The motion was seconded by Mr. Ritzenthaler and unanimously approved.
