LIBRARY REPORT: Elyse Kennedy reported that it is possible that 23 million will be cut from the Library budget. Members were urged to attend a Public Hearing at 5 pm, Sept. 3, to express their views.
LIBRARY MAINTENANCE: Dan Key updated board members on the landscape maintenance of library grounds being accomplished by city crews. He then presented the proposed plan that the Public Works Dept. made to provide additional parking on the library site. Members discussed the plan and pros and cons. Card/Arm access to the lots was discussed. Elyse Kennedy noted that library cards are not held by all library users. Adding the library to the Trolley stops was mentioned. Members felt that beautification of the University Drive side was needed regardless of what happens with the parking situation. Amy Kutell motioned to “Request that the Public Works’ plan be developed further such that it is well balanced between parking and green space.” The motion was seconded by Pamela Admire, voted upon and adopted with 3 yes and 1 no vote.
Pamela Admire reported that she wrote Adolfo Costa at Coral Gables Senior High regarding parking at the library by students. In response, Mrs. Burell called her back with contact information and asked for a towing company. Ms. Admire found a Southland Towing sign in the Library parking lot and passed on the telephone number to Mrs. Burell. Mrs. Burell said she would address the issue with students during orientation. A question arose regarding the possibility of extra Coral Gables police or Parking Department monitoring for parking by high school students. Can they be prohibited from parking there?
CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT: Amy Kutell reported that the tile mural made by children at the Youth Center will be framed and sent to the Coral Gables museum. Chris Rupp is coordinating this.
