Title
Discussion of alternative treatments for grass swales.
Body
At the January 12th Commission meeting, the City Commission directed staff to research alternative treatments for City swales.
Residential areas of Coral Gables have tree lined streets with grass swale areas between the sidewalks and the road. Some areas have become bare soil due to a number of factors that can be remediated through proper turfgrass management and management of excessive parking. Other areas have become bare soil due to factors that cannot be easily mitigated such as excessive parking or deep shade under Banyan trees. Examples of locations with excessive parking are transition areas between commercial and single family residential areas, areas adjacent to townhomes or condo buildings, and other higher density use areas. For these locations proper turfgrass management and management of excessive parking are not practical solutions.
At the January 26th Commission meeting, staff will present alternative options for consideration and discussion in order to provide viable long-term solutions to the problem and preserve and enhance the aesthetic quality of these areas.
