CITY MANAGER'S RECOMMENDATION:
That a Resolution approving the construction of a pedestrian overpass with a modern design concept by Miami-Dade County Transit at the perimeter of the University of Miami Campus connecting the University Metrorail Station to the north-east side of US1 be granted.
BRIEF HISTORY:
Recognizing the immediate need to address the issue of pedestrian safety, Miami-Dade County Transit, along with the Florida Department of Transportation have met with the City of Coral Gables and University of Miami officials to identify short-term and long-term goals for the construction of a pedestrian overpass connecting the University Metrorail Station to the north-east side of US1. Since this overpass will fall within the limits of the City of Coral Gables, Miami-Dade County Transit is seeking approval from the City of Coral Gables for the construction of this project.
The City Commission, at their August 22, 2006 meeting passed and approved Resolution No. 2006-153 supporting the long-term goal of the project which entailed the study, design, and construction of a pedestrian overpass connecting the University Metrorail Station to the north-east side of US-1, at Mariposa Court.
MDT submitted the proposed design for review by the Coral Gables Board of Architects on July 26, 2007 and the comments issued by the Board of Architects are being incorporated to the design for future submittal and approval by that Board.
On September 27, 2007 MDT conducted a public meeting to obtain feedback on the design concepts of the overpass, at which meeting the results showed that 78% of the public selected the Modern style concept as their design preference.
