Title

Presentation of a Proclamation declaring the week of May 11-17, 2008, as Police Appreciation Week in Coral Gables; and in particular, May 15, 2008, as Police Memorial Day in Coral Gables

Body

In October 1962, Congress passed a new law designating May 15th of each year as “POLICE MEMORIAL DAY,” when the entire nation is called upon to pay homage to those dedicated men and women in the law enforcement field who have been killed in the line of duty.  Subsequently, funding was approved by the City of Coral Gables for the creation of a memorial display in the Police Department lobby honoring our City’s fallen officers.

In 1991, the Coral Gables Police Department initiated a special memorial ceremony separate from the Miami-Dade County ceremony held each year at Tropical Park, where the residents of the City of Coral Gables have the opportunity to honor the memory of those Law Enforcement Officers who have made the supreme sacrifice by giving their own lives while on duty:

                     Sergeant Francis Cyril Guest, December 25, 1928; Sergeant Homer Barton, June 5, 1938;

Constable Luther T. Hardison, February 17, 1951; Officer Billy Stephens, November 22, 1957;

Officer Walter Stathers, December 19, 1967; Officer Robert DeKorte, January 21, 1972;

 Officer Luis Pena, April 2, 1978; Sergeant Alfred Terrinoni, October 12, 1980;

Officer Robert Bonnet, January 17, 1992
