Title
Resolution authorizing expenditures in the amount of $3,500.00 from the Coral Gables Police Federal Forfeited Assets to provide for the purchase of a Narcotics Detection Canine Dog.
Body
The Coral Gables Police Department participates in a Multi Agency Narcotics Investigation Task Force with the Miami Field Office of the United States Drug Enforcement Administration. A critical resource for this task force is a canine dog specially training for the detection of illegal narcotics and other forms of contraband. The Coral Gables Police Officer assigned to this task force is trained in the handling of such a specially trained canine dog. This officer's assignment as an investigator and canine handler is not associated with the operation of Police Department's Uniform Patrol Canine officers. Historically the utilization of such a specialty narcotics detection and investigation canine dog by the Coral Gables Police Officer assigned to this task force has resulted in the City of Coral Gables receiving a projected total of $1,900,000.00 from the total forfeiture by the task force of $ 7.9 million in seized U.S. Currency. The purchase of a new narcotics detection canine dog would qualify as a permissible expenditure of Federal Forfeited Asset Funds as it would meet one of the criteria statements from the U.S. Department of Justice that the expenditure supports investigations and operations that would result in further seizures and forfeitures.
