Title

A discussion requesting the transfer of ownership of Snapper Creek Lake Parkway from Miami-Dade County to the City of Coral Gables.

(Sponsored by Vice Mayor Lago)

Body

Snapper Creek Lake Parkway (“Parkway”) is a County-owned, waterfront green space approximately 20,473 square feet in size, located between the Snapper Creek Canal and Snapper Creek Road in the City of Coral Gables.

The County has a policy of divesting itself of small neighborhood parks located within incorporated areas and transferring them to the municipalities in which they are located. The Parkway meets this criteria and is classified as a “mini-park” by the Miami Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department. Furthermore the Parkway is situated wholly within the gated community of Snapper Creek Lakes.

The neighbors of the Snapper Creek Lakes community and the members of the Snapper Creek Lakes Security Guard Special Taxing District, have expressed interest in the City taking control of the Parkway to maintain the park in good condition for the enjoyment of neighbors and visitors. The residents have also approached the City to explore their options to address security concerns resulting from the park being open and accessible to the public at all hours. The City will be better positioned to address said concerns if the Parkway becomes a city-owned property.

The transfer of the Parkway to the City is in the best interest of the residents of the City and will increase the City’s park inventory, walkability score, and overall coordinated level of service.
