LIBRARY HISTORY: Kendell Turner reported that the Application for Historic Designation of the Coral Gables Branch Library building and site will be presented to the Historic Preservation Board by the Historical Resources Department staff on May 20, 2010. She encouraged board members to attend in support of the designation as well as ask others to write letters in support of the designation to Kara Kautz, Historic Preservation Officer.

Kendell said the Coconut Grove Branch Library, built in 1963, was recently designated historic by the City of Miami. The Gables branch library also meets the designation criteria of the Secretary of Interior Standards.

LIBRARY REPORT: Grace Armada introduced Marni Ardito, the new Children’s Librarian. Marni reported to the board regarding the numerous programs being held at the library, past and near future. Mayor Slesnick was thanked for his contribution to the Children’s program by reading to the children. Ileana Davis suggested that the Miami-Dade Public Library System consider having an Asian Festival in May. Marni Ardito noted that there is a Japanese storyteller who reads to the children every month or two. Ian Rosenoir stated that the idea will be considered, but it cannot be done this May, it will need to be worked into the schedule.

LIBRARY MAINTENANCE & BUTTERFLY GARDEN: Dan Keys reported that the landscape has undergone some renovations including removal of a piece of bamboo that was no longer viable and will be replaced. The renovations and cleaning will continue.

Nancy Leslie stated that the Coral Gables Garden Club would like a plaque made for the butterfly sculpture. It should resemble the plaque made for the mural. Dan Keys stated that the City would get the plaque made. Wording for the plaque was discussed and when all the details are gathered the plaque will be ordered.
