The City of Coral Gables is one of the three prize winners of the 2017 World Standard Day Smart City video contest by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Founded in 1884, the IEEE is the world's largest association of technical professionals with more than 420,000 members in more than 160 countries around the world.
In July 2017, the IEEE Standards Association opened this contest with the theme “Standards Make Cities Smarter” as a challenge to cities to submit a video that explores how standards are helping them to create the smart city of today and the future.
The City of Coral Gables Information Technology Department submitted an entry for this contest to showcase how the City leverages standards while implementing a robust and resilient network to provide critical emergency communications, as it was used during last year's preparation and response to hurricane Irma.

As one of the contest winners, the City was awarded a monetary prized of $500 from the IEEE Standards Association.
