Congratulations to Firefighter Chris Butler, recipient of the City of Coral Gables Firefighter of the Month Award, for the month of March 2014.

Firefighter Chris Butler was selected as March's Firefighter of the Month for his meritorious display of job performance, specifically his exceptional performance during a recent medical emergency call involving an unresponsive and pulseless patient. Upon arrival at the scene, CPR was in progress and an off-duty doctor was assisting in the resuscitation. Firefighter Butler confidently gained control over the patient's airway and started with advanced treatments, including injecting cardiac medications per Coral Gables Fire Rescue protocol. His quick actions facilitated a positive response regaining a pulse rapidly on the patient. Firefighter Butler continued with advanced treatments to the point where the patient was regaining consciousness and began to speak. The patient's vital signs stabilized and Firefighter Butler performed a further assessment and discovered that the patient had experienced a heart attack. The patient was transported to South Miami Hospital where he received a stint and is doing fine today. Firefighter Butler's aggressive response, determination, and expertise were instrumental in the survival of this heart attack victim.
