LIBRARY HISTORY: Kendell Turner opened discussion regarding the proposed celebration of the Kay Pancoast mural’s 40th anniversary, which is to be held in February 2009. Amy Kutell reported that she had contacted the Bass Museum requesting information on the Pancoast artwork they had displayed and was waiting to hear back. Kendell Turner reported that the mural plaque had been installed.
Discussion was held regarding various details surrounding the planning of the 40th anniversary event A tentative date of Thursday, February 26, 2009 at 6:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. was set for the opening event.
Marty Grafton brought two books; “Julia’s Daughters” and “Beyond Julia’s Daughters” for board members to see. It is planned to display them at the entrance during the opening event.
PUBLICATIONS & PUBLICITY: Susan Elwell stated she will be working closely with Amy Kutell to get some articles written which will be presented to the City of Coral Gables Public Affairs Division and Victoria Galan with the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Kendell Turner asked Susan Elwell to contact ‘Coral Living’ magazine regarding their publishing an article on the show since this is a ‘peg’ story.
LIBRARY REPORT: Grace Armada reported that Monica Martinez had been promoted to Assistant Branch Manager. The Miami-Dade Public Library System has declared August and September ‘Amnesty Months’ for the return of overdue library materials without penalty. Sylvia Mora-Oña noted that a collection agency has been hired by the Miami-Dade Public Library System to handle unpaid fees beginning October 1, 2008. All patrons will need to pay down their accounts to be able to renew their library card. The Library is being fiscally responsible.
CHILDREN’S DEPARTMENT: Sylvia Mora-Oña stated that permission to hire a new Children’s Department Manager to replace Monica Martinez has been requested.
