On March 1, 2025, at approximately 1148 hours, CGPD units were dispatched in emergency mode to the intersection of Cocoplum Road and Mira Flores Ave, reference to a juvenile who was involved in a bicycle accident. Officer Robert Thomson was able to speak to a witness who advised the juvenile male was struck by a black late model GMC pick-up truck. The juvenile male had sustained serious injuries to his left forearm, and he was transported to Nicklaus Children Hospital.
Realizing this is now a criminal investigation, Officer Thomson utilized the Vigilant ALPR cameras that were located at the entrance and exit of the Cocoplum community to search for a black pickup truck entering the community prior to this crash during the possible time frame. After reviewing the video, Officer Thomson found a black GMC pickup truck, which had entered the community at 11:36:48. However, the video did not show the truck exiting the community. This led Officer Thomson to continue his investigation and at 1400 hours, while he was obtaining video evidence at the Cocoplum Security Gate, Officer Thomson observed the truck attempting to exit the Cocoplum community. He immediately ordered the driver to pull over into Cartagena Plaza.
Officer Thomson observed contact damage consistent with an impact with a bicycle handlebar located on the right rear door area of the truck. He notified the Traffic Crash Investigator, Officer Joseph Baez, who then completed the investigation, which resulted in an arrest for no valid driver's license, leaving the scene of a crash with serious bodily injury, and a fugitive warrant out of Port St. Lucie County for marriage bigamy.
