Title

A Resolution approving a public exhibition of artworks by Master Carlos Cruz-Diez in association with Art Basel and Miami Art Week, extending through Winter, 2018. (unanimously recommended by the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 6 to 0)

Body

The Cultural Development Board has historically recommended City participation in Miami’s Art Week and, more specifically, an affiliation with Art Basel.

In 2016, an Art Basel event application was submitted by the City and approved for the first time. The application was for a VIP event celebrating, and on the site of, Alice Ayock’s artwork, Passion/Passiflora Incarnation.

This year, Mayor Valdes-Fauli generously sought out Master artist Carlos Cruz-Diez for a public exhibition of the artist’s work including installation of banners on the front of City Hall, painted crosswalks in the downtown area, and other works on view at the Coral Gables Museum.

The Arts Advisory Panel and Cultural Development Board were informed of the proposed exhibition and strongly supported it.

Building on the recently established relationship with Art Basel, the City submitted an Art Basel VIP event application to celebrate the exhibition and has, once again, been approved. The event, along with a public announcement of the exhibition, is being included in Art Basel Miami materials.

The cost of the proposed exhibition is $69,650 and related support, marketing, and events are estimated to be $15,000.

Funding for the temporary exhibition is being proposed through private sources and use of the art acquisition fund for additional support including installation, marketing, and related events.

The Cultural Development Board voted unanimously (6-0) to recommend support of the temporary public exhibition titled Celebrating Carlos Cruz-Diez at their meeting on October 3, 2017.
