Title

Resolution accepting the donation of $19,250 from the owners of 375 Miracle Mile to be deposited into the Arts Acquisition Fund for the Art in Public Places program in lieu of furnishing public art, as required by Zoning Code Article 5, Division 6, Section 5-604 Coral Gables Mediterranean Style Design Standards and amending Resolution 2007-37 to eliminate language in Section 1. referencing “two (2) abstract sculptures.”

Body

The building development project located at 375 Miracle Mile received a “Mediterranean bonus” from the City of Coral Gables for including Mediterranean style into the architecture. A component of the bonus includes a stipulation to include two sculptures on site.

At the October 26, 2009 Cultural Development Board meeting, the owners appeared before the Board who advised them of the process necessary to approve public works of art. The process would likely take several months and further delay the issuance of the certificate of occupancy, therefore jeopardizing the owners’ financing.

At the November 18, 2009 Cultural Development Board meeting, the Board discussed the option to recommend that the owners instead donate their project-allocated monies to the Public Art Acquisition Fund in lieu of furnishing the two sculptures. The discussion included how an art installation in this location, at this time, does not make sense if the location will be renovated with proposed Streetscape development. The Board made a motion to recommend the acceptance of a donation ($19,250 project-allocated one-percent for art) by the owners of 375 Miracle Mile to the Arts Acquisition Fund for the Art in Public Places program in lieu of furnishing public art.
