Library Advisory Board Meeting of November 12, 2008

LIBRARY HISTORY: Kendell Turner opened discussion regarding the planned celebration of the Kay Pancoast mural’s 40th anniversary.  She reported that Jackie Sousa will be publishing an article on the event in the Dec. and Jan. issues of Coral Living magazine. She also noted  that Gloria Burns will be publishing an article for the Coral Gables Community Newspaper. Discussion turned to the invitation process noting organizations and individuals who need to be included on the invitation list.  Regarding the event food, Ileana Davis reported that she will advise the board as soon as she has a solid answer.  Discussion regarding the artwork to be included was held. Dan Keys handed out the new brochures on the Kay Pancoast mural.  The bulk of the brochures printed will be kept at the library.

 

PUBLICATIONS & PUBLICITY:  Nancy Leslie noted that she will have an announcement put in the Coral Gables Garden Club newsletter informing members of the Kay Pancoast Mural event. Kendell Turner will be informing the Villagers. 

 

Music for the event was discussed.  Three members volunteered to contact musicians they know to provide music for the event, preferably a pianist.  When someone is found, all will be advised. Denise Delgado advised that the Miami-Dade Public Library System has budgeted $150 for this event.

 

LIBRARY REPORT:  Grace Armada reported that early voting brought 16,891 voters to the branch.  The Children’s Department librarian position was filled by Anita Pintado.

 

LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE/BUTTERFLY GARDEN:  Dan Keys reported that Public Service Dept. crews recently planted some small crotons in the Butterfly Garden.  Nancy Leslie introduced Suzy Amerkan from the Coral Gables Garden Club, who brought in a large butterfly sculpture that the club is considering purchasing.  She recommended that this sculpture be installed inside the library building to prevent theft and possibility of its fading from the elements.  Suzy Amerkan advised that the sculpture is intended to be a donation.  Kendell Turner asked that the Kay Pancoast Mural brochures be placed on the counter for the public to see.

 

ANNOUNCEMENTS:  Kendell Turner announced that Harriet Liles, author of Pinewood Cemetery, is scheduled to give a talk at the Merrick House on Sunday and The Villagers’ House Tour will be on December 5, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is $30.  Tour includes lunch.  Anyone interested in a ticket, please contact Kendell Turner. Nancy Leslie announced that the Coral Gables Garden Club House Tour will be held on Dec 7, 2008, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and is $25. All homes are within walking distance.  Anyone interested in a ticket please contact Nancy Leslie.

 

BOARD ELECTIONS:  Nominations were opened for the position of Chairman of the Library Advisory Board.  Nancy Leslie made a motion to nominate Kendell Turner to serve as Chairman of the Library Advisory Board.  The motion was seconded by Amy Kutell.  No other nominations were made.  The motion was voted upon and passed with a unanimous vote.  Nominations were opened for the position of Vice-Chairman of the Library Advisory Board.  Susan Elwell made a motion to nominate Nancy Leslie to serve as Vice-Chairman of the Library Advisory Board.  The motion was seconded by Ileana Davis.  No other nominations were made.  The motion was voted upon and passed with a unanimous vote.

 

BOARD ITEMS/CITY COMMISSION UPDATE:  Dan Keys advised the board that Maria Alberro-Jiminez, has been appointed Interim City Manager.

 

CITY PROJECTS UPDATE:  None.

 

Discussion was held regarding the next meeting date.  Board members agreed that it would be preferable to meet in January and February prior to the Kay Pancoast Mural Dedication event.  Meeting dates were set for January 14, 2009 and February 11, 2009.
