CORAL GABLES CULTURAL GRANT (DISCUSSION):

Cultural Grantee Requests, Updates, & Reviews

1.                     Cuban Classical Ballet

Ms. Spain advised the Board that the City Attorney's office is pursuing return of the Cuban Classical Ballet's FY2014-15 cultural grant funds as requested. Ms. Burgos gave a historical overview of the situation for the benefit of Ms. Horwitz.

                      

2.                     Board Reports

Board members reported on cultural programs they attended, including: Coral Gables Congregational Church, Community Arts Program; GableStage; and Area Stage.

 

FY 2016-17 Cultural Grant

1.                     Application & Evaluation Process

The on-line grant software was projected and demonstrated for Board Members. Ms. Cathers explained the evaluation process and how evaluation questions will reference the application questions. She stated that a representative from the software company will provide on-line training for the Board at the Board's next meeting. Ms. Cathers demonstrated how an applicant's answers are automatically transferred into the evaluation process for reference as Board members consider their scores.

 

2.                      City Commission Meetings

The Board was reminded of the upcoming City Commission budget hearing dates and reported that the current Cultural Grant recommended budget for FY2016-17 is $175,000 with an increase in $25,000 over the next few years.

 

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES ORDINANCE AMENDMENT:

Ms. Spain reported on the results of the Planning and Zoning Board (PZB) meeting regarding the Art in Public Places ordinance amendment. Ms. Spain stated that although it is not included in the amendment, the PZB asked that soft costs be eliminated from the construction cost calculation.

 

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES, PROJECT UPDATES (DISCUSSION):

Alice Aycock

Board members noted that the current ribbon-cutting date of October 12th falls on Yom Kippur. Staff will re-schedule.

 

Giralda Avenue Streetscape

Ms. Cathers reported that the City Commission on August 23rd deferred decision regarding the recommended artwork for the Giralda Avenue Streetscape. The Commission requested that Earl Jackson appear and speak about how the proposed artwork integrates with the streetscape design.

 

Jean Ward

Staff reported that a neighborhood meeting at Young Park is being planned in September to discuss placement of the Jean Ward sculptures. Board members will be sent a notification of the meeting. 

 

Gables Waterway

The Board was advised that staff is waiting for additional documentation for the proposed public art prior to proceeding to City Commission for approval.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

The Board was presented with a draft of the Cultural Development Board and Arts Advisory Panel FY2015-2016 Annual Report.

 

Ms. Burgos made a motion to accept the Cultural Development Board and Arts Advisory Panel FY2015-2016 Annual Report as presented. Mr. Pastor seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

DISCUSSION:

Ms. Cathers noted that the next E-News will include a piece announcing the opportunity for public comment for upcoming public art projects through the City's website. Currently, projects open for public comment include artworks for the Giralda Streetscape and Balboa Plaza.
