Brief History
This request is associated with the dredging of the Coral Gables Waterway.
Following the "No Name" storm of October 3-4, 2000, the South Florida Water Management District - Emergency Operations Center Recovery Task Force issued a report entitled "Flood Mitigation Projects Miami-Dade County, Florida" with recommendations for increasing the conveyance capacity of the C-3 Canal, including excavating the canal bottom to an elevation of -5.0 feet NGVD, which has provided the impetus for this project. As a direct result of the severe flooding encountered in the north region of the City due to that storm event, the City constructed the North Gables Storm Sewer Pump Station and collection system with a discharge line to the Coral Gables Waterway funded entirely by City Capital Improvement Funds. However, waterway dredging improvements still remained to be completed. Funding for the dredging project has now been secured through grants from the South Florida Water Management District and the Department of Environmental Protection to dredge the canal and provide for greater flood protection for City residents and businesses.
The City of Coral Gables Waterway Conveyance Improvements, C-3 Canal Restoration Project, entails the removal of approximately 34,500 cubic yards of sediment, from the Coral Gables C-3 Canal. The contractor shall perform all operations in connection with maintenance dredging and shall provide all supervision, machinery, labor, equipment, supplies, and material necessary to perform the work. Dredging will occur south of the G-93 Water Control Structure (SFWMD) in the following three locations: between S. W. 57th Avenue (Red Road) and Blue Road; beneath Ponce de Leon Boulevard and South Dixie Highway (US1) bridges, and beneath Hardee Road Bridge.
Project schedule is to secure the final USACE Permit before the end of July 2010, at which time all permits will have been issued by the various regulatory agencies for permitting. Upon the securing of all permits, it is estimated that the construction phase will begin August 2010 and the project completed by July 31, 2011.
