Public Safety Committee Meeting of July 8, 2008

[Item No. 1 - Absent Members:  A motion to excuse the absent members was made by Dr. Pasalodos, and carried unanimously.

 

Item No. 2 - Approval of Minutes:  The minutes of the May 13, 2008 meeting were approved as presented upon motion by Mr. Hornik which carried unanimously.  Assistant Chief Naue addressed the question of how the University of Miami Police Officers operate as part-time Coral Gables Police Officers.  The building implosion project was discussed.

 

Item No. 3 - Grants:  Discussion relative to the Department of Homeland Security, and other regional grant availability, and the Coral Gables Police Department’s grant participation.

 

Item No. 4 - Safety Enhancements:  Discussion relative safety enhancements that could be implemented for large scale events, such as the July 4th events. 

 

Item No. 5 - UCR Statistics:  Discussion relative to the preliminary Violent Crime UCR statistics released by the FBI.  Assistant Chief Naue reviewed the City’s UCR statistics in comparison.  Recent gun law changes and the Reserve Police Officer Unit were also discussed in reference to the effect on crime rates.

 

Item No. 6 - Chairperson:  Mr. Rene Alvarez was selected as the Committee’s new Chairperson for the coming year, with Vice-Chair to be nominated at the next meeting.

 

Item No. 7 - Crime Watch:  Executive Director of Crime Watch, P. O. Kiel, discussed the similarities in function of both Crime Watch and the Public Safety Committee, and ideas to better serve the citizens.

 

Item No. 8 - City Commission Update:  None.

 

Item No. 9 - City Projects Update:  None.

 

Item No. 10 - Fire Department:  Chief Reed discussed the Comprehensive Emergency Plan with will become available soon, and will address many different types of emergency situations.

 

Item No. 11 - Police Department:  Assistant Chief Naue discussed the areas surrounding the City of Coral Gables and those areas’ effects on Coral Gables crime rates.  Major Hudak discussed the four, ten-hour shifts plan for the Police Department.

 

Item No. 12 - Next Meeting:  The next meeting of the Public Safety Committee was set for September 9, 2008, 6:00 pm, at a location to be determined. 

 

There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 7:35 p.m.
