CORAL GABLES CULTURAL GRANTEE REQUESTS, UPDATES & REVIEWS:

Peter London Global Dance Company

Ms. Cathers reviewed Peter London Global Dance Company’s program description for their FY2016-2017 cultural grant and the organization’s request to modify the program. Board members were forwarded the grantee’s request prior to the Board meeting.

 

Ms. Burgos made a motion to modify the program from three performances to the two performances that have already taken place. Mr. Perez seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

Opera Atelier

Ms. Cathers advised the Board of the new performance date scheduled for Sunday, December 3 at 5:00 p.m. at Steinway Piano Gallery with the lecture tentatively scheduled for November 30th at Steinway Piano Gallery.

 

UM, Department of Arts & Sciences

Ms. Cathers reported that UM has stated that they are proceeding with their proposed programming as presented and have not requested any modifications.

 

Final Reports

Board members were encouraged to login to the grant portal and check their passwords. Dr. Roth requested that staff forward login instructions to all Board members. The Board was reminded that the next Board meeting on November 7th will also be the Final Report review and scoring meeting.

 

CORAL GABLES CULTURAL GRANT FY2017-2018:

Board members were informed that thirty-eight (38) organizations are currently working on grant applications. Board members were asked to plan on the Cultural Grant review and scoring meeting on December 5th lasting until about 1 p.m.

 

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES, PROJECT UPDATES:

Art Basel Proposal

Ms. Cathers stated that the department has started receiving RSVPs for the Art Basel VIP reception the City applied for to honor a public exhibition by Master artist Carlos Cruz-Diez. In addition to the reception, she said, the City is sponsoring the Lowe Art Museum’s Bubbles & Brunch and is assisting with transportation for attendees back to Miami Beach following the Lowe’s artist lecture.

 

With no further discussion, the following motion was made:

 

Ms. Burgos made a motion recommending the temporary art exhibition of Celebrating Carlos Cruz-Diez. Dr. Mayorga seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

Venetian Posts in the Gables

There were no updates on the Venetian Post project.

 

NATIONAL ARTS & HUMANITIES MONTH:

Staff informed the Board that the proclamation declaring October as National Arts and Humanities Month in Coral Gables will be presented at the next City Commission meeting on Tuesday, October 10th at 8:30 a.m. Current grantee organizations are being listed on the proclamation along with additional supporters as submitted. Ms. Cathers announced that violinist Miclen LaiPang will perform a short piece at the presentation. Ms. Cathers shared Mr. LaiPang’s extensive biography, including performances throughout the world and his status as a full-scholarship student at UM, including his status as the current recipient of the University’s 1714 Guarneri violin. Dr. Roth asked if Ms. Spain could accept the proclamation on behalf of the organizations, to which Ms. Spain agreed. Board members were encouraged to attend.

 

BOARD-AS-A-WHOLE APPOINTMENT:

Dr. Roth advised the Board that with full Board membership, they may now appoint a Board-as-a-Whole member. Dr. Mayorga, the current appointee, expressed interest in continuing to serve and left the room during the discussion. Dr. Roth asked if anyone had other people they would like the Board to consider. No other names were added and the Board unanimously agreed that Dr. Mayorga contributes to the Board in a meaningful way. With no further discussion, the following motion was made:

 

Mr. Perez made a motion to appoint Dr. Rosa Maria Mayorga for an additional term of Cultural Development Board service. Ms. Burgos seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

NEW BUSINESS:

Dr. Roth asked the Board to appoint a Chair and Vice-Chair. The Board discussed briefly and asked if Dr. Roth would continue to act as Chair. Ms. Burgos offered to act as Vice-Chair. The Board-as-a-Whole confirmed unanimously Dr. Roth as Chair and Ms. Burgos as Vice-Chair.

 

OLD BUSINESS:

Ms. Cathers stated that a neighborhood meeting will be planned to review the location and placement of the Jean Ward sculptures as recommended by the Board at their last meeting.

 

Board members were asked to provide recommendations to fill Arts Advisory Panel vacancies.

 

DISCUSSION ITEMS:

Ms. Cathers announced that Alice Aycock is the recipient of a lifetime achievement award in contemporary sculpture from the International Sculpture Center based in New York.

 

Board members were told that (Arts Advisory Panel chair) Dr. Carol Damian will be speaking at the Coral Gables Museum tomorrow night, Wednesday October 4th at 6:00 p.m.

 

ITEMS FROM THE SECRETARY:

Board members were invited to the Giralda Avenue Streetscape opening on Friday, October 13th at 7:00 p.m.

 

Ms. Spain reminded Board members to submit their financial disclosures to the City Clerk.
