Body
LIBRARY REPORT: Anita Pintado, Children’s Librarian, reported that the MDPLS is beginning a new early initiative for children ages birth to 5 years titled “Reading Ready” begins the first week of November. All library staff that work with children, will be trained to assist in this initiative. There are six skills that have been identified as early literacy skills that are necessary before they learn to read and write. Those skills are; Phonological Awareness, Letter Knowledge, Print Awareness, Print Motivation, Vocabulary, and Narrative Skills. Kendell Turner asked if there were any programs to teach signing for the hearing impaired. Anita did not know of any, but would check into it.
LIBRARY HISTORY: Regarding the Historic designation of the library building, Kendell Turner reported that she is in the process of getting the documentation ready to take to Kara Kautz.
Kendell Turner noted that she consulted with a professional restoration and wood refinisher regarding the recent stain that was applied to the entrance doors on both sides of the library. He advised that the current stain, applied at the direction of the MDPLS, was inappropriate for the mahogany paneled doors. The cost to properly refinish the two sets of doors was quoted at approx. $2,600. Kendell has informed Kara Kautz about their condition, and Kara’s assistant, Simon has come by the library to see their condition.
LIBRARY MAINTENANCE & BUTTERFLY GARDEN: Dan Keys reported on the condition of the grounds. Public Service Dept. crews have been continuing general upkeep along with trimming some trees away from walkways, etc.
ANNUAL REPORT: Pamela Admire motioned to “Adopt the Annual Report for the Library Advisory Board as written.” It was seconded by Ileana Davis, voted upon and adopted with a unanimous vote.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Discussion was held as to whether the election of officers should be postponed until December meeting. It was decided to go ahead with the election of a Chairman when Ileana Davis nominated Kendell Turner to serve as Chairman and she accepted the nomination. The nomination was seconded by Pamela Admire, voted upon and Kendell Turner was elected Chairman by a unanimous vote. Board members agreed to postpone the election of a Vice-Chairman until the December 9th meeting when hopefully all members will be present.
