Title
Library Advisory Board Meeting of April 8, 2009
Body
Chair, Kendell Turner thanked Susan Elwell for her 8 years of service to the Library Advisory Board.
LIBRARY HISTORY: Kendell Turner thanked everyone involved with the Pancoast Family Celebrating Legacy event. She noted that Marty Grafton was very grateful for the recognition given to her family. Kendell Turner reported that she and Jim Davis decided that the two library renderings should be donated to the Miami-Dade Public Library System and will be working with Mr. Davis to write a donation letter. The Library System would then make a decision as to where the rendering will be displayed.
Kendell Turner recommended the Library Advisory Board move forward with the local historic designation of the Coral Gables Branch Library building and grounds. Susan Elwell moved to “Request that Kendell Turner proceed with the necessary paperwork to request that the Coral Gables Branch Library be designated historic on a local basis.” The motion was seconded by Nancy Leslie, voted upon and adopted by a unanimous vote. Kendell Turner stated that she would move forward with the application and documentation to be submitted to the Historical Resources Department.
PUBLICATIONS & PUBLICITY: No new business.
LANDSCAPE MAINTENANCE: Dan Keys reported that the Public Service Dept. has installed a Chorisia tree in the Butterfly Garden to replace some bamboo that had died and that the landscaping crew is doing a better job mowing, edging and general cleanup. He noted that Public Service crews perform a higher level of maintenance work to supplement their efforts.
BUTTERFLY GARDEN: Nancy Leslie reported that the Coral Gables Garden Club had purchased the butterfly sculpture and the City Commission has accepted the donation. The Garden Club would like to make a ceremonial presentation of the sculpture at the next Library Advisory Board meeting. Dan Keys advised that he has requested and received the costs to create a display case to be made by the Public Works Department. Regarding the butterfly sculpture itself, Dan felt that it should be kept secure by the City until its display case is ready to be installed. Kendell Turner added that she would like to see a brass plaque with the appropriate information, placed on the display base.
LIBRARY REPORT: Grace Armada reported that the story telling camp was going on in the meeting room today. There are several story telling workshops happening in April and a Tales Under the Stars event on April 27th. Elections will also be held at the library on April 14, 2009.
Ileana Davis brought up the issue of the lack of parking availability around the library building, noting that people are parking under the banyan trees on University Drive even though there are “No Parking” signs posted. Ileana felt that there may be a way to create more parking spaces on the Segovia Street side. Grace Armada said that she may be able to have a “Library Patrons Only” sign posted. Dan Keys recommended that board ask for a study of the formalization of the parking on the University Drive side and evaluate if any parking could be created on the Segovia Street side. Ileana Davis moved to “Request that a search for additional parking around the library building be made by the City of Coral Gables.” The motion was seconded by Nancy Leslie, voted upon and adopted with a unanimous vote.
ANNOUNCEMENTS: Dan Keys reported that new City Manager, Patrick Salerno, started on Monday and the first Department Head meeting will be tomorrow.
