Title
Landscape Beautification Advisory Board Meeting of June 4, 2009
Body
Chairman, Maricris Longo opened the meeting at 9:18 a.m., the roll was taken, and a quorum was present. A motion was made to “Approve the minutes from the May 7, 2009, meeting as written.” The motion was seconded, voted upon and adopted unanimously.
TRAFFIC CIRCLE - ZAMORA & HERNANDO: Dan Keys explained that this circle is larger than the other circles on Hernando with a center approximately 12-15’ with a sewer manhole included. Dan requested suggestions from board members. Ideas were discussed including planting a medium to large tree, palms, and various plant materials. Linda Lawrence made a motion stating that “The Landscape Beautification Advisory Board recommends that Bridal Veil trees and Plumbago plants be installed in the Zamora Avenue & Hernando Street traffic circle.” The motion was seconded by George Blet, voted upon and adopted with a unanimous vote.
Maricris Longo brought up the Coral Way and Segovia Street traffic circle, stating that historically, Coral Way was a Slash Pine road. She would like to see that created again because she does not like the idea of putting Royal Palms in that circle. Robert Parsley discussed the use of pines in small areas versus large areas such as parks. In his opinion, the landscape plan for Coral Way and Segovia St. is a done deal and the board should go with it and focus on the center area. Maricris Longo stated she is also concerned about the lighting planned for the circle.
Dan Keys distributed preliminary landscape designs that were prepared by board member, Robert Parsley, for the Segovia Street traffic circle and for Segovia Street up to Bird Road. Discussion was held regarding the two traffic circles, Right-of-Way landscape and median landscape.
The landscape plan for Biltmore Way and Segovia Street traffic circle which includes Royal Palms, was briefly discussed. Maricris Longo stated that she preferred the planting of Ceiba trees at this circle. It was agreed that the members would look at the area and take the specifics of the location into consideration before making any recommendations. The issue was tabled to be discussed at a future meeting.
