Library Advisory Board Meeting of December 9, 2009

LIBRARY HISTORY: Kendell Turner reported that she continues to gather information to take to Kara Kautz, for the historic designation of the library building. She asked if anyone would like to assist her. Pam Admire offered to help Kendell organize the paperwork for the historical designation of the Library.
PUBLICATIONS & PUBLICITY: No new business.
LIBRARY REPORT: Grace Armada reported that the library had received a magnifying machine for use by people with poor vision. The electrical system main switch for the library building was upgraded. The Library System book sale is scheduled for Dec. 10-13, 2009; members were encouraged to attend. A bookmark contest was held for children 6-12 and each branch had their own winner as well as the overall winner for the library system. The Coral Gables winner is posted outside. Kendell Turner stated that Harriet Liles has donated her book on the history of the Pinewood Cemetery to the Coral Gables library, so we should see it on the shelves soon.
LIBRARY MAINTENANCE & BUTTERFLY GARDEN: Dan Keys reported the landscape contractor is doing a pretty good job. Public Service crews have been continuing their general upkeep work. Board members asked about what is happening with the butterfly sculpture and its display case. Dan Keys reported that the case was ordered and he would contact Procurement and see where it is.
ELECTION OF OFFICERS: Nominations for the position of Vice-Chairman where opened. Ileana Davis nominated Amy Kutell to serve as Vice-Chairman. The nomination was seconded by Pamela Admire, voted upon and Amy Kutell was elected Vice-Chairman by a unanimous vote.
Nancy Leslie reported that the Merrick House will be open on Saturday; it has been decorated for Christmas and looks wonderful. Also, the Coral Gables Garden Club is procuring a sculpture of Mrs. Merrick for the Merrick House garden. Plans are preliminary as they are searching for a sculptor.
Kendell Turner announced that there will not be a Boards and Committee Reception this holiday season.
Kendell Turner reported on University of Miami 'Friends of the Libraries' events that are coming in 2010, everyone is welcome to attend. The flyers will be scanned and forwarded to board members.
Ileana Davis will be presenting a Basics of Meditation class next Saturday at the Pinecrest Branch library.
