Arts Advisory Panel Meeting of May 29, 2019.

NEW BUSINESS:

a. TEMPORARY EXHIBITION - CARLOS ALBERT

The Panel was provided with an application requesting the temporary exhibition of a single sculpture by Carlos Albert on private property that is in a prominent, accessible, and frequently used plaza at 2655 Le Jeune Road on the corner of Le Jeune Road and Valencia Avenue across from Publix.

 

A motion was made by Ms. Tschumy to recommend the temporary exhibition of a sculpture by Carlos Albert at the corner of 2655 Le Jeune Road for a period of up to thirteen months from November 2019 through December 2020. Mr. Roselione-Valadez seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

b. ART BASEL 2019 - RAFAEL BARRIOS

Following up from the previous meeting, Dr. Damian reported going with staff to visit Rafael Barrios’ studio. Later, she said, staff provided a tour of the City with the artist, including meeting with the Mayor. The artist was asked to prepare a proposal for artwork to be exhibited during Miami Art Week/Art Basel.

 

A motion was made by Mr. Brito to recommend Rafael Barrios as the 2019 Miami Art Week/Art Basel artist. Mr. Kolasiński seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

 

c. JEAN WARD - SCULPTURE LOCATIONS

The Panel was advised of Coral Gables High School’s interest, through the Coral Gables Community Foundation, of installing public art as part of renovations at the school and on the property. Staff advised that information was forwarded to the Foundation about the three recently restored Jean Ward sculptures along with proposed locations. The Panel discussed the locations and agreed that locations in front of the school that are visible from Bird Road are the most desired. With no further discussion, the following motion was made:

 

A motion was made by Mr. Roselione-Valadez to recommend installation at Coral Gables High School of the three restored Jean Ward sculptures, further recommending that they be installed in a grouping visible from Bird Road. Ms. Tschumy seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.

ART IN PUBLIC PLACES UPDATES

a. SUN STORIES

Ms. Cathers reported that the installation of the public art exhibition “Sun Stories” at Giralda Plaza is scheduled to start within the next few weeks.

 

CITY COMMISSION ITEMS

a. ARTS ADVISORY PANEL

The Panel was presented with proposed changes to the Arts Advisory Panel resolution as submitted to the City Commission by the Mayor. Ms. Spain reported that the Chair and Vice-Chair of the Cultural Development Board spoke at the Commission meeting in favor of following best practices in having a professional art panel and the value it adds to the process. Ms. Spain added that the Commission asked for the item to be brought back and is likely to include a recommendation to add two (2) positions that do not need to meet the arts profession requirement.

 

DISCUSSION ITEMS:

Ms. Cathers reported that she and Ms. Spain met with Spanish artist Manolo Valdes and that the artist is interested in working with the City on a future exhibition.

 

ITEMS FROM THE SECRETARY:

The Panel was advised of the exhibition in City Hall requested by the Mayor featuring photographs of selections from the public art collection. The exhibit will remain in place for a limited time and has been well received.
