Title

A Resolution approving the recommendation of the Cultural Development Board for the sole use of the theater space at the Biltmore Hotel (currently occupied by GableStage) as a live theater or performance venue for a not-for-profit organization. (unanimously recommended by the Cultural Development Board approval/denial vote: 7 to 0).

Body

The City of Coral Gables has long had a reputation as a live theater destination and home of numerous theater companies. In the coming years, the City is anticipating loss of two premier destination theaters, Area Stage Company and GableStage.

The current location of Area Stage is set for demolition and GableStage has been selected as the resident company for the Coconut Grove Playhouse (upon completion).

The Cultural Development Board met and discussed the importance of maintaining a strong theater presence in Coral Gables and respectfully recommends that the theater space at the Biltmore Hotel be maintained for sole use as a theater and/or performance venue for a not-for-profit organization.

The Board recognizes that the space is currently set up as a small scale theater venue and would benefit from having a tenant in the location that could program music, lectures, and other culturally significant events.

The Board further recommends that rent for the space be maintained at an affordable rate with similar terms and conditions currently in place with GableStage.
