Title
Resolution authorizing staff to proceed with implementation of the Neighborhood Renaissance Program street resurfacing initiative.
Department Head Recommendation
Approval.
Brief History
Resurfacing and improvement of City streets was included as a component of the Neighborhood Renaissance Program (NRP) as presented to the City Commission on April 26, 2011 (NRP approval), June 7, 2011 (financing approval), July 19, 2011 (appropriation of funds approved) and September 27, 2011 (approved as part of the Capital Improvement Program). This resurfacing program will result in significant and much needed improvements to the City's aging streets. The list of streets to be resurfaced includes approximately 30 lane miles and is equivalent to what would normally be paved in five years. The preliminary estimated cost of this work is approximately 3.5 million dollars. This effort is believed to be the most ambitious street resurfacing initiative ever undertaken by the City.
In an effort to assure that City streets currently in need of resurfacing are included in this program, the City engaged the engineering firm of C3TS to evaluate all City streets. C3TS prepared a map showing all streets that are in a current need of resurfacing. Staff independently reviewed the streets and confirmed C3TS' findings. A complete listing along with a map indicating the streets to be resurfaced is attached.
All of the streets as indicated on the attached map would be resurfaced through two separate construction contracts. The first contract will include all identified neighborhood streets North of US 1. Final design work for this first phase would be completed in the near future, and it is anticipated that a construction contract will be presented to the Commission for award early next year. The construction contract for the second phase will address all remaining streets and be presented to the Commission for award by next Summer.
